S’Accabadora

Birth and death are part of the same circle of life.

Until a few decades ago in Sardinia, the femmina accabadora was said to be called upon to end the suffering of those in prolonged agony. Her name derives from the Spanish acabar, “to end.”

According to tradition, the Accabadora would arrive at night, dressed in black, and bring death using su mazzolu, a wooden hammer. In some accounts, the same woman who assisted the dying also served as a midwife — accompanying people at both ends of life.

The two sides of this medal reflect this duality: the woman who helps life begin and the woman who helps life end.
